Borobudur at sunrise: what to know before you go
Entry times, the early drive from Yogyakarta and how to choose a viewpoint for the morning mist.

Borobudur is a ninth-century Buddhist temple complex in Central Java, and sunrise is the time when the surrounding hills are most often covered in mist. Access for sunrise is controlled, so the entry time and ticket rules can change. Check the current schedule before you plan the rest of the day.
The drive from Yogyakarta takes roughly an hour in good traffic, so most sunrise tours leave the city before four in the morning. The climb to the upper terraces is steady rather than steep, but it is easier with a headlamp and light shoes. Dress in layers, because it is cool before dawn and warm by mid-morning.
After the sunrise visit, come back down slowly and spend time on the lower reliefs. Many visitors rush to the top and miss the carved stories along the walls, which are the reason the temple matters.
